Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results, this is SEO.


As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.


Let’s face it, SEO’s are really marketers and most of them are starting realize that now. In 2009 it’s all about “building buzz” to acquire clients while the days of creating lots of Subdomains are now over and proving to be a waste of time.


Rank doesn’t matter if your site earns or generates good leads and 2009 will be year of Traffic & Sales & not Rank.


It’s important to remember that for every search result there are 10 or more choices for the searcher to click on, so your great ranking position does not guarantee traffic, in order to do that – you have to stand out from the other links on the search engine results page.

The page title is the most important element that can influence your search engine rankings.  


The text displayed in the Google search results the page title is known as the “snippet”. The text that is displayed is the meta description of your page, if it includes keywords.  If not, Google will find other text on your page that does. This means that you have the ability to directly change the snippet of your ranking by simply changing your meta description.

Great search rankings will not guarantee traffic or sales on your site – it simply places you in the right place at the right time.  So don’t forget that SEO is marketing and not simply web development or programming.  Ensure that your page title and meta description are compelling and “action oriented” and you will gain far more from simply being there.


Google in 2009 and the things to watch for:


Video campaigns will be more effective than your PCP programs.


Google has introduced some new functionality to its Site Search product, which allows customers to search within your own site. The feature that everyone is talking about is the ability to add pages on-demand to be indexed by site search, so customers have access to these new pages as soon as they’re ready.


Google Analytics finally gets a handle on flash, more specifically; the newly introduced Google Analytics Tracking For Adobe, designed to solve a few of the problems.


Black Hat SEO and Spamdexing using link farms and keyword stuffing that degrade both the relevance of search results and the user-experience of search engines will be detected much faster now and Google has employed new techniques for 2009 to remove these sites very quickly.


Google just released features for iPhone with updated maps that include the addition of Street View, Public Transit and Walking Directions.


Microsoft is close to signing a search deal with Verizon Wireless–making Live Search the default search engine. Under the proposal, Microsoft and Verizon would share ad revenue generated by cell-phone Web searches.


Verizon would also be guaranteed payments of about $550 million to $650 million over five years – about twice what rival Google offered. In addition, Verizon could agree to use Microsoft’s mobile operating system in more of its phones, generating additional payments. Verizon is still in talks with Google, will Google make a higher bid just to block Microsoft?
